New EVs in the Works

New EVs

The automotive industry was slow to embrace the electric drivetrain, but the last few years have seen even Europe’s V-12-obsessed sports car makers jump on the bandwagon. Almost every marque worth its salt has an all-electric vehicle in the works, and the coming decade will bring loads of intriguing battery-powered coupes, SUVs, sedans and hypercars.

The latest entrant to the New EVs race is the Maserati Grecale Folgore, which takes the shape of the brand’s popular crossover and packs a battery-powered drivetrain capable of delivering 550 hp. That’s enough power to propel the zero-emission model from 0-60 in less than four seconds and reach an official top speed of 248 mph.

EVs are also making their way into the pickup truck market, with both Ford and Chevy offering zero-emission versions of their best-selling models. Chevrolet’s upcoming Silverado EV will offer at least 664 hp and a towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds, while the 2020 Ford F-150 EV promises a similar setup with even more power and range.

Luxury marques have been a bit slower to convert to electric power, but Acura is finally jumping on the bandwagon with its upcoming 2024 ZDX EV SUV. Its streamlined looks might not be as eye-catching as the Precision EV Concept that debuted at the Los Angeles auto show in 2022, but it should still deliver a slicker alternative to BMW’s X5 iPerformance and Cadillac’s own Lyriq EV.

Mini is also set to unveil its first standalone EV, the 2025 Aceman, later this year. Based on a concept introduced in 2022, the production version should adhere fairly closely to its bold vision and pack a 54.2-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of delivering 340 miles between charges.

While the Chevy Bolt EV may be dead, at least in its current form, General Motors CEO Mary Barra has promised that a successor will rise from the grave in 2025 to take over as the brand’s budget-friendly EV entry point. The reimagined EV will ride on the brand’s Ultium platform and presumably be positioned below the soon-to-arrive Equinox EV.

Audi’s popular A6 is also getting an EV makeover, and the resulting four-door will be one of the most aesthetically pleasing vehicles in its class when it debuts later this year. The production EV will look nearly identical to the A6 E-Tron concept that debuted at the 2021 Detroit auto show, and it should be powered by a dual-motor electric powertrain capable of producing 469 hp and 726 lb-ft of twist.

Lastly, Lotus is preparing to unleash the sleek Eletre utility vehicle on the world. Its two-door design might not scream “sports car,” but it should offer plenty of performance thanks to a dual-motor, four-wheel-drive powertrain that’ll generate up to 649 hp and enable the EV to run from zero-to-60 in just 4.1 seconds. A higher-performance Quadrifoglio variant is also in the works, and should deliver even more impressive acceleration numbers.
